Recovery is not a straight road. It’s a winding path filled with setbacks, breakthroughs, and thousands of small choices that eventually lead to lasting change. This month, as we honor National Recovery Month, we’re highlighting the powerful story of Jay Bjorklund, a longtime enduraLAB member whose journey from substance abuse to sobriety shows just how transformative fitness and community can be.

Life Before Recovery: The Grip of Addiction

Jay’s story began in the bar industry, where he worked his way up from bartender to general manager. On the surface, it looked like success. But the environment was steeped in late nights, constant partying, and a culture where heavy drinking and drug use felt “normal.”

“There’s always somebody that wants to go out,” Jay recalls. “Like there’s never a night where it’s just quiet.”

What began as occasional partying escalated into dangerous daily habits:

  • A 1.75-liter bottle of vodka every day to day and a half
  • Around $500 a week on cocaine
  • Substance “cocktails” to keep functioning as his body broke down

Eventually, his health hit a breaking point. Blackouts, panic attacks, and a failing liver made it clear: this path was unsustainable. After a biopsy, his doctors gave him a dire warning:

“You’re done at 39 tops if you keep this up.”

Denial, Awareness, and the Psychology of Addiction

What makes Jay’s story so relatable is his honesty about denial. For years, he didn’t see alcohol as the root cause of his problems. Withdrawal symptoms like shakes, anxiety, and panic attacks were chalked up to other issues.

This disconnect is common in addiction. The brain resists connecting the dots between substance use and declining health. Breaking that barrier is often the hardest step toward recovery.

The Turning Point: Small Steps, Big Shifts

Jay didn’t take the traditional route of formal rehab or inpatient programs. Instead, his recovery unfolded gradually through small, incremental changes:

  • Running when cravings hit instead of pouring a drink
  • Tackling one unhealthy habit at a time
  • Redirecting addictive energy into fitness and learning

This approach allowed him to avoid the whiplash of “all at once” change and build sustainable habits over years.

The true turning point came in April 2022. Sitting in an airport with a beer in hand, Jay looked at his wife and said, “I think I’m done.” He finished that beer and hasn’t touched alcohol since.

“I realized I was letting an inanimate object control my life. And I was done.”

Finding Healing Through Fitness at enduraLAB

The role of enduraLAB in Jay’s recovery was pivotal. Unlike his earlier failed attempts at fitness, where being thrown into intense workouts led to injury, at the LAB he found coaches who met him where he was.

How enduraLAB made the difference:

  • Coaches adjusted training to work around his injuries, not ignore them.
  • Accountability and support came from both coaches and fellow members.
  • Programming focused on longevity, ensuring he could progress safely.

Here, Jay wasn’t just rebuilding his body, he was rewiring his mind. Fitness became a healthier outlet for the same intensity that once fueled his addiction.

A Mindset for Life: From Output to Longevity

Today, Jay’s mindset is less about grinding himself into the ground and more about training for life:

  • Moving well without pain
  • Building strength and endurance for the long haul
  • Staying present for his family, his education, and his community

At enduraLAB, this philosophy is central: fitness isn’t about short-term results, it’s about building a body and mindset that last.

The Power of Community in Recovery

What made Jay’s story possible wasn’t just the workouts, it was the people. The enduraLAB community provided:

  • Encouragement on tough days
  • Shared accountability that kept him consistent
  • A sense of belonging that replaced destructive environments

This is the power of integrated community storytelling: real lives being changed, not in isolation, but through the support of a tribe that refuses to let you quit.

Advice for Others on the Recovery Path

Jay’s message for anyone struggling with addiction is refreshingly direct:

“It boils down to you wanting to do it.”

Support systems matter. Programs help. But at the end of the day, the choice is yours. The strength to change lies within and fitness can be the catalyst that proves you’re capable.

Where Jay Is Now

Today, Jay channels his energy into:

  • Fitness challenges that push him without breaking him
  • Education, as he pursues his MBA
  • Mentoring others, using his story to reduce stigma around addiction and recovery

His life is proof that transformation isn’t just possible, it’s powerful.
