Meet Kindra Johnston, October Member of the Month

Kindra has done a lot of experimenting at the LAB. From class times to endurance and nutrition programs, she can attest that hard work and getting uncomfortable can change your life! She has learned what works specifically for her and is still progressing forward with her goals. Read more below!

What brought you to enduraLAB? I was at another gym before joining the Lab where I wasn't allowed to be myself.  I needed a gym where members could work hard, have fun, and decompress from everyday stress.  I tried 24 hour fitness before I found the Lab, and that was a ridiculous experience, I needed a community atmosphere; a gym family.  One of my gym buddies recommended enduraLAB, he participated in open gym at the time but told me about the classes. I came in and toured the facility, and was welcomed in by LAB dog, Endy.  I was sold! I believe this is my 5th year and I have enjoyed every moment!

What did your workout routine look like before joining the LAB? My workouts looked very different before joining Enduralab. When I was at the other gym, I focused only on what other people were doing and I did not focus on my own fitness journey.  I was very dependent on my friends and did not have the confidence to go to a class on my own.   I absolutely hated running, like I couldn't even say the word without throwing up a little, lol!  So I mainly did strength and only did the cardio that was in the WOD (no running).

What healthy changes have you made since joining the LAB?

I have been able to consistently workout 5-6 times a week, I have changed my window for eating (last meal 3hrs before I go to bed-game changer!!), I have focused more on quality sleep, and I focus on my nutrition-it's not all about the numbers on the scale.  I also had the opportunity to experience adapting to an injury-that it's okay to scale workouts and just because it's scaled doesn't make the WOD easier!  I had to scale every workout in January to about April because of my foot. I became intimate with the ski erg and we now have a decent relationship. With the injury I missed out on the Buns and Guns group, however, I jumped into the Push and Pull with a great group of guys!  I loved working out with my son, Jarod, during Push and Pull-he would look at what I was doing and then Lee would make him go heavier lol!  In the past I would have just stopped, Lee wouldn't let me quit just because of a bummed foot.  He said that I would just get stronger in other areas, just don't stop, keep moving! Shhhh, he was right!

Tell us what you do outside of the LAB?

I am a mother of 2 incredible boys, Luke and everyone knows Jarod :) . This is my 3rd year as a school counselor (K-8) at Saint Rita Catholic School.  I am passionate about my career and blessed that this is where God has led me. I love to travel and many of our vacations include hiking, camping and running.  I love to cook and bake, read, and veg out to Netflix marathons.

How have you grown as an athlete since joining the LAB? Brag a little.

I can now do pull-ups!! Finally made the 200+ club for deadlifts (took years to get over a mental block), I have completed numerous half marathons, rucked 22 miles with 22#, rucked marathon with 10#, Ragnar, completed 10,000 step ups, 4x4x48… definitely have been able to grow as an athlete with the support and accountability from the Enduralab coaches and community. It all started when Lee gave me a money-back guarantee to join the 10k turkey trot training! With all of the events that we do as a community, I have gained confidence in my abilities.  I have learned that it's okay to  be uncomfortable....uncomfortable equals growth, both physically and mentally.  Gaining confidence, I don't rely on my friends' schedule to attend/not attend classes, I LOVE my 5am besties though and we definitely hold each other accountable!  I also actually enjoy running....(yes, I actually said that!), through the run program, with Lee and Elizabeth's guidance, I know HOW to run and I feel great running (even with a 20# ruck!)  I feel that the programs and events that Enduralab provides allow us to grow as an athlete within a community that supports and lifts each other up, so it's easier to risk being uncomfortable.

What is a goal you have set for yourself in the next 6 months?

I want to keep getting stronger in my deadlifts and get past the 225# set during Night of the Living Deadlift

Complete my first marathon in February before I turn 50!

100 DU's before January (how are you doing on this goal, Becca?)

What is your favorite enduraLAB event or program?

Night of the Living Deadlift

And the 4x4x48

Had a blast with the Push and Pull group!!

What advice would you have for a new person starting at enduraLAB?

Don’t focus on where everyone else is, there are athletes that have been working out for years and will have different goals than you. Focus on you, perfecting the form of your lifts, listen to the coaches, and have fun!!  This is your fitness journey, no one else's.  Join in on the Enduralab adventures, the community is here to support and encourage you!!

If we had a workout in honor of you, what would it be called and what would it consist of?

Love them Burpees!!

It would have burpees, toes to bar, some box jumps, and hang power cleans and ohhhh some double unders 😊😊

Favorite treat meal/restaurant in D/FW?
