Meet Drew Erickson, September Member of the Month

Drew partook in Hell Week in 2021 and was hooked ever since. He loves the lab community and the challenges that are brought to him on the regular. He values the coaching and attention to detail he has received since joining. He believes the process (showing up even when you don't feel like it) has helped him get PRs in every category. Read more to find out his next challenges and goals.

What brought you to enduraLAB?

Nathan Randal invited me a little over a year ago.

What did your workout routine look like before joining the LAB?

I broke my foot 4 years ago training for an ultra-marathon. Since then, I had gotten out of any kind of routine and haven't run much since then. So before coming to the lab it was very inconsistent.

What healthy changes have you made since joining the LAB?

I think it's helped challenge me to be more disciplined and to be open to various workouts and lifts that I would have never tried by myself.

Tell us what you do outside of the LAB?

I'm the Lead Teaching Pastor at Travis Avenue Baptist Church, in Fort Worth.

How have you grown as an athlete since joining the LAB? I've hit PR's in every category including bench, deadlift, and squats.

What is a goal you have set for yourself in the next 6 months? I need to focus more on the nutritional side of things and be more disciplined when it comes to what I eat. I also think mobility and flexibility to increase strength in squats and deadlifts.

What is your favorite enduraLAB event or program? Hell Week is always a favorite, but I honestly just enjoy the nine-week cycles on and off with the weights and trying to increase in strength little by little.

What advice would you have for a new person starting at enduraLAB? Focus on the process and understand it's slow and often a grind. The changes you want to make are subtle and gradual. There are days when you won't feel like coming in, and those are the days you lean into the discipline of just showing up.

Favorite treat meal/restaurant in D/FW? My wife and I love Chuys. I'd probably eat their creamy jalapeño every day if I could.

Current read / podcast?

Podcast: Stuff You Should Know, This American Life, 2 Bears, 1 Cave

Books I'm currently reading: Boys In the Boat, Nimitz at War, and The Last Slave Ship

Pump up song? Anything by George Strait, but never Dave Mathews.

Any final words or thoughts? I've had a blast over the past year coming to the lab, mostly in the 8:30 class. I love showing up and everything is already planned out. I think working out in a community setting like the LAB makes all the difference in the world. I love the coach's attention to detail on the lifts and how the smallest of details matter to them as they work with and observe each person. I've definitely gotten better in form by listening to them and have become more aware of what I need to work on.
