From conquering his first deadlift to increasing his front squat weight, his growth as an athlete radiates confidence. Read on to learn about his next goal, favorite enduraLAB event, and the workout he envisions for himself.
What brought you to enduraLAB?
I was wanting to get stronger but lacked the confidence to perform barbell lifts safely after injuring myself a few years prior. I wanted to ensure I had coaches who were knowledgeable and a gym setting that would both hold me accountable and encourage me to return.
What did your workout routine look like before joining the LAB?
My workout routine was inconsistent and consisted of a lot of cardio. If I lifted weights, it was mainly on a machine because the free weights were intimidating.
What healthy changes have you made since joining the LAB?
I’ve made a greater emphasis on getting to sleep at a more regular time and increasing my protein intake.
Tell us what you do outside of the LAB?
I work as an HR Business Partner for Lockheed Martin. “Gross, he’s HR…” Yes, yes… I am. And unfortunately, I cannot promise your distant relative a job. Outside of work, I enjoy biking the Trinity Trails, racquetball, traveling when I can, and sitting poolside on weekends.
How have you grown as an athlete since joining the LAB? Brag a little.
Blake was able to coach me from never performing a deadlift to being able to lift 300x2 as of the last cycle. I’ve also been able to increase weight on the front squat. We’ve all got good and bad days, but I’ve noticed that my confidence has grown significantly in the gym since joining the LAB.
What is a goal you have set for yourself in the next 6 months?
I’d love to be able to do a muscle up.
What is your favorite enduraLAB event or program?
I’ve really enjoyed the Murph. This year was the second year I’ve done it. It’s challenging and also benefits a good cause.
What advice would you have for a new person starting at enduraLAB?
Take it slow, be consistent, and don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with literally anybody in attendance in a class. The folks who work at the LAB and those who attend classes are all awesome. Being able to keep things light, smile through the pain, and motivate one another is what makes the class special.
If we had a workout in honor of you, what would it be called and what would it consist of?
It would be the Blake bro down and consist of heavy bench, shoulder and arm annihilation with a healthy dose of water breaks and group talk.
Favorite treat meal/restaurant in D/FW?
My favorite treat is probably tres leches cake.
My favorite meal spot is Coco Shrimp. The shrimp are tasty, the rice is drenched in unhealthy butter sauce, and there’s a side salad to make you feel better about yourself. What a combo.
