How to Survive a Holiday Party and Keep Your Nutrition on Track
We all know that the holidays can wreak havoc on your diet because most festive gatherings include indulgent foods and sugar-laden drinks. Fend off extra holiday weight with these simple holiday survival techniques:
Enjoy in moderation. Alcohol is loaded with calories and is usually paired with high sugar mixers such as simple syrup and juices. Alternate each alcoholic drink with a large glass of water to cut calories and keep you feeling full. One of our favorite tricks is a glass of sparkling water with lime to keep the festivities going.
Eat before the party. Never go to a party hungry. Eat a smaller meal before you head out for the evening. Your best bets are foods that are high protein or fiber as they will keep you fuller longer, and keep your caloric content in check.
Exercise. Knowing that this time of year is busy, it can be easy to justify skipping your workouts. Keeping them consistent or adding in an extra workout may be just what you need to stick to your fitness goals. A high intensity workout in the morning can give you the calorie burn you need and keep your metabolism fired up for the rest of the day. No time for the gym? Don't graze. The closer you are to the food, the more likely you are to eat. Stay out of the kitchen and socialize with friends and family away from the buffet. Get a small plate of food and then mingle to prevent mindless grazing. We also recommend waiting 10-20 minutes between helpings.
Bring a host gift. Thank your host by bringing a healthy appetizer to share with guests. Pinterest is full of great ideas. Some of our favorites are roasted root vegetables, shrimp cocktail, hummus with green and red peppers, or a plate full of fresh berries, grapes and hard cheeses.
Just a nibble. The holidays bring out dishes you’ve been waiting for all season. Don’t deprive yourself, rather take a smaller slice or just a bite. It will give you the satisfaction that you’re looking for and the first bite usually tastes much better than the last.
